Many people enjoy traveling with their dogs. While some prefer to take their furry friends on the road with them, others prefer to travel via plane.

If you plan on traveling on a plane with your dog, the following tips will help prepare you and your pet for the journey.

1. Make sure your dog can handle the flight.

Not every dog will last through the flight. Dogs that are high strung will be too nervous during the flight, causing them to panic. This can result in barking or whining for the duration of the trip, or cause the dog to embark physical harm on themselves in order to try and break out of the cage. If your dog cannot handle traveling short distances in the car, flying is not a good option.

Some dogs are prone to breathing problems that may become worse in the cargo area of planes. Shih thus and pugs have inverted mouths that cause severe breathing problems, and placing them in the cargo of a plane can make their symptom worse, and sometimes even life threatening.

2. Visit the vet.

Before your pet can fly, it’s a good idea to visit the vet. Even if your dog had a recent visit, it’s important to make sure that they are okay to fly. Some airlines require proof from a vet that clears the pet for flying. Your vet will also be able to let you know if they think flying is a bad idea due to your dog’s temperament and behavior.

3. Know the rules of your airline.

Not all airlines have the same pet policy. JetBlue has a JetPaws Pet Program that allows passengers to bring their pets as carry-ons. American Airlines requires that pets be at least eight weeks old before travel.

Most airlines allow small dogs in small carriers to be carried as carry-ons as long as the total weight is under 20 pounds. Just be warned that there is a pet carrier fee for traveling with your dog, and they range from $70 to $200.

Most airlines have specific requirements regarding the carrier of your pet. Most carriers have to be big enough for your dog to sit, turn around and lie down. They should also have both a water and food bowl attached to the inside of the door, and there should be ventilation on all sides. You will also need to ensure that your pet’s name as well as your contact information is listed on the crate, and your carrier cannot contain any wheels.

4. Decide if you’re comfortable.

If you have a larger dog, they will need to travel in the cargo area of the plane. This can be stressful for both you and your pet. You won’t be able to keep an eye on your pet, and they may be scared or experience a severe case of separation anxiety. It is also possible that, like other luggage, your pet may end up lost or sent to a completely different destination than you. It’s important that you are okay with your decision and that you’re comfortable with your dog traveling alone in cargo.

5. Use direct flights.

It will be more expensive, but a direct flight is the easiest option for your pet. This ensures that their time on the plane is as short as possible, and it reduces the chance of them getting lost during a layover.

6. Determine if your dog has motion sickness.

If your dog cannot handle being in the car, they’re not going to like being on a plane. Dogs that suffer from motion sickness will vomit, and this will not make for a pleasant trip for your pet or for you to clean when you retrieve your dog. Severe vomiting can also lead to dehydration, and if left untreated, could have fatal effects.

7. Make your pet comfortable.

Pack plenty of chew toys for your dog to keep them occupied during the flight. It’s also a good idea to put a blanket in the crate to make them more comfortable. If you want, you can also put an article of your clothing in the crate too so that your dog can always smell you.

8. Arrive at the airport early.

Allowing your dog to see the airport and all the people as well as take in the smells will allow them to be more accustomed to it. By arriving early, you allow your dog to desensitize themselves from the chaos, which will make their trip easier to handle. This is a great idea for dogs that are easily scared of loud noises.

When you’re prepared to travel with your pet, it can make the whole journey run smoothly. Make sure that you comply with all safety regulations and always keep your dog’s best interests in mind. Make sure they’re comfortable and safe, and make sure your contact information can easily be found. If the thought of flying with your pet is too stressful, you may want to consider a road trip instead.

A new puppy has decided that you should bring him home with you and you just don’t have the heart to say no. Maybe you live in a small apartment or you just bought some very expensive new carpet and you have decided that the best way to handle the situation is to crate train your new puppy. Sounds like a good idea but you don’t know where to start. Crate training is a good option for just about any dog but there are a few things that you need to take into consideration. You need to get a crate that is the right size and is high quality, you need to understand that it isn’t to be used for extended stays, you need to let your puppy out the very first thing when you get up, and never use the crate as a punishment.

The first thing you need to consider is the size of the crate that you are going to need. Do not look at that little puppy to decide how big the crate should be. You need to base the size of the crate on how big that little puppy is going to be when he is a full grown dog. The crate has to be big enough for him to turn around inside and for him to lay down comfortably. Always error on the side of too big rather than too small, your dog will thank you for it.

The second thing you need to worry about is the quality of the crate that you choose. It needs to be strong enough to keep the dog inside when he is full grown. Dogs are a lot stronger than most people think, so buy a high quality crate now or you will when you have to replace it. Consider it an investment and buy the best quality crate that you can afford, your dog is worth every penny.

Don’t leave your dog in the crate for extended periods of time. He should never be left inside for longer than overnight. If you work long shifts or odd hours make sure that someone can stop by and let him out. It isn’t fair to him to be locked up for that long and holding his urine that long can be dangerous to his health.

Let your dog outside to do his business the very last thing before you put him in the crate at night and let him out first thing in the morning. It should be the very first thing that you do when you get out of bed in the morning. He has been shut in all night, he needs to go outside and relieve himself, do not make him wait.

Finally, don’t ever use the crate as a punishment. Never tell him to go get into it when he has done something wrong. His crate should be a place that he associates with good things. When he isn’t locked in at night, or when you leave the house, the door to his crate should be left open. He should be able to consider it a safe place and be able to go in and out of it as he pleases.

Five easy steps is all it takes to crate train your new puppy. Buy as high of quality crate as you can based on what his full grown size is going to be, don’t use the crate for extended stays, let him out as soon as you wake up in the morning, and under no circumstances should you ever use his crate to punish him. The crate is his home. Treat it that way and you will both be able to enjoy the benefits of crate training.

What makes Boo’s popularity even more intriguing is he’s not one of those petite, precious pups being toted around by a celebrity as if he were a high-end fashion accessory.

2. Mishka is a 9-year-old talking Siberian Husky. This blue-eyed beauty is known around the net for her abilities to talk and sing. Mishka has made guest appearances on TV talk shows. Mishka has also been featured in commercials on both radio and television. The name Mishka is Russian for Teddy Bear. With a following on Facebook of nearly 175,400 fans; almost 230,800 subscribers on YouTube serving up over 243,235,369 video views Mishka is undoubtedly one of the top dogs in Social Media.

3. Sockington, or Socks as he’s come to be called is a cat whose story began when he was spotted near a T stop just outside of Boston. Socks waited all day for someone to give him something to eat. One passerby noticed Socks in the same spot later in the day. Socks was picked up, finally and eventually found his way to his forever home with Jason Scott in Waltham. Today Socks lives in the lap of luxury, feasting on tuna and playing with cat toys. Once in a while Socks has been known to renounce his toys and destroy items belonging to others. The tales of Socks and his crazy antics are shared on Twitter with his 1.5 million followers.

4. Beast may belong to Mark Zuckerburg, but this little Puli does quite well with his own Facebook account. Puli is a breed of the Hungarian Sheepdog variety. Beast entertains thousands of fans with pictures from his walks, cuddle time and those long, lazy days spent hanging out in the main Facebook control center. Currently Beast has well over a half million fans on his Facebook page.

5. Toaster may not be at the same heightened celebrity status, and Internet stardom of Beast, the pup belonging to former Digg owner Kevin Rose is obviously destined to be popular on Twitter. Toaster is a labradoodle who loves the Lakers, Packers, and winner of the Cutest Dog in SF 2011. Toaster entertains his 4,500 followers with doggie tweets Toaster style.

Exercise is good for the soul. Exercise helps relieve stress. Exercise keeps you in shape and helps you stay healthy. As much as exercise is beneficial for people, it’s extremely important for dogs. Taking the time to exercise with your pet is a terrific way to develop that special bond even more. It’s more important than ever to ensure you get a proper amount of daily exercise. Experts recommend a minimum of thirty minutes each day. Exercising doesn’t have to be overly rigorous. It can also be fun for you and your dog.

Here are a few ideas to get you started toward relieving stress and getting plenty of exercise, both you and your pooch.

Chase/Wrestle: Stimulate your dogs mind with a strategic game of chase and wrestle. Your pup will really get into this type of play not to mention help get you both quicker on your feet and paws!

Agility Training: Create an obstacle course for you and your dog. Build it out of platforms, wood, tires, cones or even a set of hula-hoops; whatever you have. Once in place, you’ll be able to teach your dog to race through it. Make a game of it. Time yourself and your dog and see how you do.

Soccer: Practice kicking a soccer ball in a way that invites your dog to chase it and attempt to pass it back. Check your local pet store for pet safe soccer.

Jogging: There’s nothing like listening to the sound of your feet hitting the pavement as your heart rate increases. And no doubt, your dog will love taking a jog with you. If you need a way to spice up your routine, try adding short bursts of sprints. Sprinting is one of the best exercises you can do for cardio health. You’ll want to keep an eye on your dog to make sure you aren’t pushing him too hard.

Doga: Not into high impact exercise? Check out a local Doga program. Doga is a fairly new concept that takes you through a yoga routine while incorporating your dog into the workout. This is an exercise geared more toward your health, and not so much on your dog’s exercise aspects, but your dog will love spending this kind of quality time with you and you’ll be healthier for it.

During exercise take precautions so that you and your dog aren’t over exerting yourselves. The ideal exertion monitor is when you’re working out, pay close attention as to whether you are able to carry on a conversation, if not, slow down. Your dog shouldn’t be pressed to the point of uncontrolled panting or refusing to follow your lead. Be mindful of the climate and temperature. You can begin to know more about your dog’s ability to handle temperatures based on their breed. Different breeds handle different weather elements better than others.

Hydration is important for both you and your dog. If your dog seems confused or off balance he may be experiencing dehydration. It’s imperative you decrease the exertion level and break for water. A little relaxation isn’t a bad idea at this point either. Until your pooch returns to normal, keep an eye on him and if needed, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

This should give you a starting place to get up and get moving for the health of you and your pet. Most importantly, make every effort to stick with it. Place focus on creating a routine both you and your dog can maintain and will enjoy. If you get bored with repetition easily, stick to the same days and times, but change up your activity as often as you like.

There is nothing more exciting than getting a pet for the first time, especially when that first new pet is a kitten. These precious balls of fur are constantly looking to play with their owners, discover new areas to hide in and leaping, creeping and crawling their way into their owner’s heart. However, alongside with the excitement of owning a new kitten comes the concern of how to take care of your new pet.
Kittens, though smart and independent, do need a lot of care from their owners, and there is a lot that goes into keeping one. This can be terrifying for new owners, who might not know what goes into having to care for an animal. Below are a few of the most common questions from new kitten owners, and the kitten care that is recommended to alleviate these new concerns.

1. What types of food should I buy for my kitten?

Kittens need kitten food that has been specifically made for their body size and their age. There are foods for newborn kittens, young kittens, adult cats and mature, older cats. Because of the variety, going to buy food for your new pet can be overwhelming. Talk to a pet store associate about your concerns and make sure to tell them how old your pet is. They can point you to the right food brands that will help your pet stay healthy.

2. How will I know if my cat ever gets sick?

You will be able to tell if your cat gets sick just the way you would if your child or spouse was sick: they start acting strangely. There are other indicators for bad health, but if your pet is suffering from cat bad breath, a change in stool color or a drastic personality change, there is a chance that your pet may not be feeling its best. Changes in eating and sleeping patterns are also a cause for concern. If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, it may be time to take them to the vet for further examination.

3. What if my kitty gets a hairball?

This can be a serious concern, especially for people who have never owned a cat before and do not know what to expect. Firstly, it is never a good idea to overreact. Unfortunately, hairballs are common for cats. However, there are options for someone looking for a hairball remedy for cats that are available from your vet and pet supply store. Again, asking your vet or pet store employee or researching online will all lead you to the answers that you’re looking for.

Being a new pet owner will have its challenges, but cats are amazing, loyal and fun pets that are worth the effort and the challenges that come with owning a new pet.

Our pets can enjoy the holidays too, as long as pet owners consider their four-legged friends’ needs and feelings when planning activities. Specifically, dogs have routines and habits on which they rely to keep happy and healthy. Some are very common sense, others you may not have thought about just yet. And it’s always good to look at these things from a canine perspective.

Noise

Let’s first consider the topic of excessive noise, and of what the noise consists. If it is mainly normal talking and laughter, that should be ok, but when lots of people are talking and laughing the decibel often reaches ear splitting levels. If you add babies’ cries, toddler wails, and screams from older children and adults, many times the noise reaches rock band concert heights! (Of course no insult intended here.) At that point even the old hounds whose ear flaps cover their ears find it helpful to hide under an out of hearing distance bed.

Privacy

One of the key elements to helping our dogs survive the holidays is providing privacy. And I’m not just talking about when they need to relieve themselves. I am referring to being able to take much needed naps, siestas, or even the overnight sleep. In our house one year, we had a family of four, two single folks, and the two of us. That wasn’t so bad, but we also had our dog and their cat! Well, the only way it would work was if the dog would be content to sleep at night in our bedroom…thankfully he was! The cat would come out of his room at night for his curiosity prowl and to get food and water. Talk about peaceful coexistence! Let’s think now…if anyone had to get up in the night for anything they just had to try and remember in their sleepy stupor not to step on the cat! This went on for ten (10) glorious days!

In addition to sleep, the issue of people “fussing” over your best friend is quite annoying by itself! You think it’s bad to have this happen to children when they grow up and some well-meaning relative comes up to them and makes a big deal over how much they’ve grown or how handsome/pretty they’ve become, etc. ad nauseum, you ought to see how they go on over these cute, soft furry doggies! Oh my, too too much, too much fuss!

“Strange” Treats

And please keep strange treats to a bare minimum, or not at all, preferably. If your dear doggie is not used to eating human food, do avoid starting this insane habit now. He will inevitably regurgitate all over your freshly cleaned carpet, not once but more than once and usually in places you cannot find until everyone has left, and all you have left is the odor! Obviously he threw up somewhere as he was trying to find a private, quiet place! Then when he has to go outside he will partake of much grass, thus making the repulsive fluid look much like spring basket grass amid a broken egg! Just a suggestion: keep him in the kennel or somewhere safe from well-meaning “Chuckies.”

Walks Please!

By all means, please do remember to give pooch plenty of opportunities for exercise and fresh air. Trust me he will jump for joy at any occasion to leash up for a spin! Just a nice walk, nothing boisterous is perfect, allowing him sufficient time to be leisurely or trot along. He will be a happy, relaxed friend when you get back…and no doubt so will you! Of course if the weather is an issue, please have a plan B in mind.

Ah! Holiday time with the family dog and all the family…a joy and experience difficult to put into words! However, with these suggestions in mind, I certainly hope Fido will have as much fun as all the guests. It really is important to put others before yourself…especially your pup, who gives you such pleasure all year. Happy Holidays!
